Computer-mediated communication (CMC) is a way
of communication that occurs through the use of two or more electronic devices
with the presence of internet connection mostly. The examples of CMC are
instant messaging, emails, chatrooms, and social network services. It has been
widely used by people nowadays as it brings many advantages as the nature of
CMC is to ease individuals to communicate between one another regardless of different
times and locations. We are also allowed to keep in touch with our families and
friends that live far away from us since geography gap is not a problem
anymore. This makes things easier for us in dealing daily activities. Besides
that, this way can be used by individuals who might have problems with
utterances and disabilities to participate in any communications that they want
to have which allows them to open up more easily and be more expressive.
Lastly, it can be said that CMC is linked with “gender-less” judgement as
people are allowed to not mention their genders to the public. Hence, we are
less likely to be compared, judged and stereotyped because of our physical
characteristics.
However, just like any other modern invention,
CMC has its own disadvantags. Firstly, it can only be applied when there is the
presence of technology and internet. People are relying to both of these in
order for this communication to take place. People also tend to be anti-social
in real life and stop to do physical activity when they are getting too attach
to the technology. On top of that, it causes dizziness, to the extent of nausea
at certain level if individuals do not stop using the technology for a long
time. Other than that, CMC can lead us to be misunderstood with each other
since there will be lacking of facial expressions and body languages. This is
because in CMC conversation, there is no face communication like head nods,
smiles, eye contact and the tone of voice. Another kind of problem that can be
caused by CMC is the rise of cyber bullying as well as scammers among the
users. Since people do not know where and who a particular person belong to,
this can guarantee that person to do mischief without getting caught by the
authority. This is clearly bad for the society as irresponsible users may throw
and spread slanders to the innocent groups at the tip of their fingers.
In conclusion, CMC has both advantages and
disadvantages in its own way. The invention of this magnificent technology was
to minimize the problem of communicating that faced by human beings if they are
not at the same place. Nevertheless, it is the users ourselves that have taken
it for granted by misused CMC for our own benefits that may harm not only to us
personally, but also people around us.
Simple
guidelines on internet usage, A.S.A.P.;
A – Appropriate - The usage
of appropriate language is importance. Word
choices,
intensifiers, correct spelling and even smileys, need to
be chosen
wisely so that the receiver will clearly get the
message of
what you are trying to convey.
S – Salutation - Identify
yourself and begin the message with salutation! Greet
the
receiver with suitable greetings before you start your
conversation.
A – Avoid - The usage of sarcasm, coarse and
rough language should be
fully avoided. Although sarcasm sometimes is
used widely among close friends, it can also be misinterpreted when individuals
do it on the internet.
P – Privacy - In whatever we do, respecting others’
privacy should never be
neglected. Hence, a user must take this thing
seriously. Other than respecting the receiver’s personal life, a person also
should not quote or forward any personal message without the permission of the
original author. This is so importance because false news can be spreaded in
split second if we do not apply this!
