On
30 October 2017, Dr Mazni was invited by Dr Rozina to give a little bit
exposure on what to expect from a research paper related to Computer Mediated
Communication. Dr. Mazni gave us a gist or bits of her thesis which can be
referenced for the class assignment. Personally, the presentation was very
informative and helpful. It’s comprehensive as we get to learn a lot about
Computer Mediated Communication along the way. If I were to compare Dr Mazni
thesis to CMC assignment given by Dr Rozina, CMC assignment was only small part
of the thesis.
In the thesis presented, Dr Mazni had
chosen forums as the medium of communication. The reason is because it is
easier to be accessed and observed. She also mentioned that the data collection
will be a lot easier to be analysed as forums can be accessed anywhere at any
time. From what I could see, the aim of the research is to get to know how to
improve language through the usage of online forums. There are many aspects
being mentioned by Dr Mazni on how to tackle the issue. The framework consisted
of linguistics approaches such as looking at the ideas, word choice, cohesion,
coherence, rhetorical structures and others. The analysis can also include the
quality of discourse in the forum.
Other than that, it is also
important for us to know how to develop the research paper. Dr Mazni suggested
that we start with identifying the research question, developing the methods
and finding data gathering instruments.

By
following all these steps suggested, InshaAllah the research will be a lot
easier to be conducted. The presentation by Dr Mazni was wonderful with a lot
of input. She also mentioned about the software called Atlas.ti which can be
used to code thousand words data easily. However, the price of the software is
sort of expensive and we hope that IIUM can actually provide the software for
students’ benefits.
In conclusion, Dr Mazni presentation
was very enjoyable and beneficial. It helps us a lot in term of getting ideas
for our CMC assignment. We hope that Dr Mazni can achieve good result for her
thesis and passed excellently.
